ANIMATION TODAY with Andreas Hykade and friends 9 – 15 September 2013 Ludwigsburg/ Germany

New Master Class on Contemporary AnimationThe EFA Master Class 2013 ANIMATION TODAY isvdedicated to modern animation. During the week, the participants will form a team and create an animation film from the original idea to the completed film.

The multi-disciplinary workshop in co-operation with the Institute of Animation, Visual Effects and Digital Postproduction is equally addressed to experienced animation creators from the classic animation industry, with a background in games, or the independent scene – all are welcome.

The workshop will be offered in a short term training format of seven days including the arrival and departure day. In a mixture of group sessions, screenings, case studies and lectures, but with a focus on hands-on exercises, the workshop will allow the participants to gain a profound knowledge of the creation of an animation film covering all stadiums of a classic animation production: idea, story, design,project bible, storyboard, animatic, layout, animation,scoring and exploitation.

Held by author, designer and director Andreas Hykade (www.hykade.de) The workshop will be accompanied by different renowned animation filmmakers who will share their individual approach to the respective “topic of the day”.

Andreas Hykade has been creating animation films since the mid-90s. Among his films are WE LIVED IN GRASS (1996, German Short Film Award), RING OF FIRE (2000), THE RUNT (2007, German Short Film Award, FIPRESCI Award Annecy), TOM & THE SLICE OF BREAD WITH STRAWBERRY JAM & HONEY (2009, Grimme Online Award) and LOVE & THEFT (2010, German Short Film Award, Sacem Award for original music, Annecy 2011). He has also worked with the German band DIE TOTEN HOSEN for which he created the video clips 10 KLEINE JÄGERMEISTER (1995, Echo Award for best German music video) and WALKAMPF (2004, Grand Prize for Commissioned Animation, Ottawa Int’l Animation Festival 2005), has repeatedly collaborated with British animation artist Ged Hanley (video clips and commercials) and has created ZUKUNFTSVISIONEN, the film installations for the German pavilion at the world exhibition EXPO
2000. Andreas is also a professor for animation film at the Institute of Animation, Visual Effects and Digital Postproduction (www.animationsinstitut.de).

Supported by the MEDIA programme of the EU and the MFG Filmförderung Baden-Württemberg, the EFA Master Class will take place in Ludwigsburg in the South of Germany at the Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg’s Institute of Animation, Visual Effects, and Digital Postproduction. The Animation Institute offers a modern technical infrastructure. Every single student is assigned a workstation (Windows, OSX, and Linux) that features the most commonly used tools, as well as special project-based solutions. The standard formats are Full HD, Digital Cinema, and 3D Stereo. Students have an Optitrec Motion Capture System and a 3D printer at their disposal; moreover, they have access to the Filmakademie’s entire film and sound studio infrastructure.

Applicant Profile

The EFA Master Class 2013 is designed as a multi-disciplinary workshop for 16 creative European film professionals who work on animation film – screenwriters, directors, animation artists, designers, technical directors and producers. All participants must be professionals in their respective departments and should have a relevant track record.

Working language is English.

Participation fee: EUR 500 covering participation and meals. Transport and accommodation are not included.
A limited amount of scholarships is available.
