Interview with Gabriela Salgueiro, director of short film Enco, travesias a vapor/ Enco, Steam Crossings

What does the animation mean for you?

I think that animation allows us to make our dreams come true, it’s a whole world where using different technics you can create a moment, a character, a space and a story to immortalize an idea. Animation allows us to manifest whatever is in our imagination, using art, music, light and everything that you feel is the best to represent the screenplay. For me it’s a constant challenge because you can experience the different technics and with that knowledge we can keep exploring this vast world.

How did you start in animation film industry?

When I was studying design I had some lectures and workshops where I learned what animation is, what the screenplay structure is and the vast possibilities that it has, related to technics, I fell in love at that time with this. I decided to use everything that I had learned so far about design and develop my own project “ENCO, steam crossings”. At the beginning I wanted to make a book, but I decided to make a stop motion animation. From that moment I realize that I don’t want to stop learning about this.

From whom did you learn animation?

I admire so much Tim Burton, since he made his first movies I became interested and I wanted to learn about animation, then I watched Quay brothers and Jean Švankmajer shortfilms, also Russian shortfilms from Yuri Norstein Alexander Petrov, among others.

Recently I attended to some conferences with Yuri Norestein and in the Alexander Petrov Studio in Russia, where I found out that animation is a massive world and I know just the 5%, the only way to learn is making your ideas come true, knowing others experiences, structuring a solid screenplay, with rhythm, poetry, defined length and characters strategically well thought. For me it’s a whole new world that I’m starting to travel in, I still feel like a student. I believe that animation is a collective art, where the experience is developed through the different members of the staff and what everyone can offer to it.

How would you describe Enco, travesias a vapor/ Enco, Steam Crossing?

As a fantasy story, full of simplicity and innocence. It tells how the kid’s imagination can recover and evoke the memories of an old abandoned ship that was really important in its time.

What is the message of the film?

That’s a good question, because it was one of the challenges since the beginning, what I wanted to communicate. These kinds of message are universal and they take part in fantasy. To preserve those things that surround us, which sometimes we don’t notice their presence. The massage is to go back to our childhood and develop our imagination, our dreams. Actually the shortfilm was made without dialogs so anyone in the world can understand it. Part of the story is real, it’s inspired in a journey that I did in the south of Chile, this ship is abandoned there and the people of that town could watched the film and enjoy remembering their past.

How do you manage to make films in this period of crisis?

Using anything that is over my workbench, with my draws or any new idea to experiment. I believe that it is not an obstacle to develop a good project. The important thing is to develop the ideas in any way possible for you. I think that after you finish the script you can start deciding which technic is the most appropriated to describe the massage that you want to share.

What kind of animated films do you like?

I like stop motion a lot. I feel affection for it since I realize the effort that it needs and the relationship that one build with the characters. I like simple stories, fantasy, mystery, I also like the films from Layka, Hartmann and Tim Burton. I really like Pixar shortfilms because just in a few minutes they achieve a really good script and a beautiful technique with universals messages.

What future projects do you have?

At the moment we are about to publish the illustrated book for kids “ENCO, steam crossings” that includes the shortfilm. We will publish the book in December 17th here in Santiago, Chile, and we hope to be able of sending it to libraries around the world, also I’m finishing two screenplays one for an animation and another for a live action shortfilm, that I hope to make next year. I really like artwork focus in children and for that reason I want to keep working in illustrated books for kids and using design and illustration continue increasing this fantasy world that captivates me.

What would you like to do in life that you couldn’t do it because of lack of time, resources, etc..?

I would love to have more time for travelling, I think that all cultures are so interesting and travels give you new ideas, experiences and motivation to make more projects, you find new characters and so on. I would love to make more animations, more draws. I want to study subjects that support the developing of my new ideas, maybe will be great to have my own studio and associate film, animation, design and art. I think that when you learn from other areas you realize that is possible to support and develop your ideas a lot better.
