Anca Damian, who received the Cristal for Best Feature at the 2012 edition of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival for Crulic-The Path to Beyond , now she is invited to the 2015 edition with The Magic Mountain, that will have the premiere there. The animated feature film is produced by Damian’s Aparte Film, and co-produced by Arizona Productions.
The Magic Mountain together with Crulic-The Path to Beyond are a trilogy about heroism. Made in a postmodern style with a variety of visual techniques, paper cutouts, cartoon, photography and film, reveals the real story of a Polish political refugee in Paris, Jacek Adam Winkler. His story is that of a „knight errant” a „Don Quixote of the twentieth century” . He is one of those who want to change the world, even at the cost of their lives.
Artist, photographer, and an experienced climber, Adam Jacek Winkler is the one who climbed Mont Blanc Mountain where he headed up a flag of solidarity with the Afghan people. He fought on the side of the Mujahideen in Afghanistan in the 1980s, after the Soviet invasion. Jacek Adam died on October 12, 2002, during a solitary ascent of Mont Maudit.
For this documentary animation, Anca Damian used photographic record left behind by Adam Jacek Winkler, his designs, but also real shots, in the style of silent movies.
Production was done by the DSG and Abys Studios in Romania and one studio in Poland. Animation and graphics was made by: Theodore Ushev, Raluca Popa, Dan Panaitescu, Sergiu Negulici, Dragos Stefan Tomek Duck. The music is being composed by Alexandru Balanescu.
The Magic Mountain is a co-production Romania/ France/ Poland, with a budget of 978,000 euros. The premiere in Romania is scheduled for October 9, 2015.
